Welcome to Editing for Digital and Print Audiences!

A bit about me: I am the editor of the Journals in Minneapolis — two biweekly community newspapers. I’ve been at the job for six years, and truly love covering the city. I’m a 2001 graduate of the University of Minnesota’s School of Journalism & Mass Communication. I’m thrilled to be back in Murphy Hall — teaching and learning so much from students.

Agenda for first day: I want you all to leave a comment on this post with answers to the following questions so I can get to know you better:
— What is your name/year in school?
— What are your hopes for this class?
— What would your dream job be?

We will also review the syllabus and do a couple of lab activities on the first day.

  16. My name is Phil Durry and I’m Journalism Sr. My goal for this class is to learn how to better edit myself. Even if I’m not working as an editor checking other writer’s work, it is important to be able to check my own work carefully and correct mistakes before sending them in. This is an invaluable skill for all writers and has been a weakness of mine in the past. My dream job is to work as a writer at Game Informer Magazine here in Minneapolis. They are the number 1 largest gaming magazine in the U.S. and the environment there would be perfect for me.

  18. My name is Chanel DeVetter, and I am thankfully a senior in the Journalism program. The main thing that I am hoping to get out of the class is more insight into what areas, if any, of journalism I want to further pursue. I hate the “dream job” question, I suppose because it makes me think to much but also because I want to do so many things. I know I want to work in design, but what area of that whether it be magazine or web layouts, designing photo shoots, interiors or even events I am still trying to decide. But since it’s my dream job, and doesn’t need to be too realistic, I would love to be an all-encompassing freelance designer.
